Drosselmeyer Takes Off in Breeders' Cup Classic
Drosselmeyer and Mike Smith came from the clouds to snatch victory away from Chantal Sutherland and Game On Dude in Saturday's Breeders' Cup Classic at Churchill Downs.
Game On Dude controlled the pace under Sutherland through reasonable fractions of :23.67, :47.84, and 1:12.82. Uncle Mo was in hot pursuit followed by Stay Thirsty, So You Think, and To Honor and Serve.
At the one mile marker, it was still Game On Dude by a 1/2 length with Drosselmeyer biding his time in 10th place.
A stubborn Game On Dude was back in front by a length around the far turn and heading for home. He looked like he might go all the way but Drosselmeyer was picking off horses on the outside and was bearing down on the longtime leader. The wire was quickly approaching and Drosselmeyer blew on by under a full head of steam to win by 1-1/2 lengths.
Game On Dude held off the late charge of Ruler On Ice with Havre de Grace completing the superfecta.
Flat Out was next, followed by So You Think, To Honor And Serve, Ice Box, Rattlesnake Bridge, Uncle Mo, Stay Thirsty, and Headache.
Drosselmeyer, owned by WinStar Farm and trained by Bill Mott, stopped the clock in 2:04.27 and paid $31.40.
