Favored Smokey Lonesome won for the third time in his last four starts, holding off Blue Chagall to win the $60,000 feature Friday night at Hollywood Park.

One race later, Johnnie Gold, a 14-1 shot, trigged a second consecutive Pick 6 carryover when he rallied to defeat favored Creston Cowboy. The carryover into Saturday’s card is $312,479. Post time is 1 p.m. The Pick 6 begins in the fourth race, which has an approximate post time of 2:38 p.m.

After tracking pacesetter Ace of Aces for most of the trip, Smokey Lonesome got the lead with less than an eighth of a mile to run and went on to the half-length victory.

Ridden by Joe Talamo, who has been aboard for all three of his recent wins, the 5-year-old Teton Forest gelding out of the Alysheba mare Exclusive Symbol ran the 1 1/16 miles on turf in 1:41.77.

The public choice for the first time in his 11 race career, Smokey Lonesome, who is trained by Art Sherman for owners Bruce Chandler and Stuart Tsujimoto, paid $6, $2.80 and $2.10. The fourth lifetime score for the chestnut increased his earnings to $182,610.

Seeking his second win over the Hollywood Park turf course, Blue Chagall, the 2-1 second choice, paid $3 and $2.40. He finished a half-length in front of Ace of Aces. Ferneley and Calimonco completed the order of finish. Informed was scratched.

Making his first start in California in well over a year for owner-breeders Pam and Marty Wygod and new trainer John Sadler, Calimonco lost all chance at the break when he dwelt.

Stewards Scott Chaney, Kim Sawyer and Tom Ward conducted an inquiry into the start to determine whether or not Calimonco should be declared a non-starter. Chaney, Saywer and Ward ruled that there would be no change as they determined the 5-year-old Storm Cat horse caused his own problem. Calimonco whipped his head sharply to the right simultaneously with the opening of the gate, leading to the extremely unfortunate beginning.
