Freedom Acres, Inc.’s Disco Chick broke running and never looked back, cruising to an eight-length upset victory in Saturday’s $100,000 Skipat Stakes presented by Northwestern Mutual.
The 23rd running of the six-furlong Skipat for fillies and mares 3 years old and up was the first of seven stakes, four of them graded, on the 14-race Black-Eyed Susan Day program at Pimlico Race Course.
Ridden by Trevor McCarthy for trainer Mario Serey Jr., Disco Chick ($11.20) sprang from Post 2 and went straight to the front through a quarter-mile in 23.21 seconds, a half in 45.83 and five furlongs in 57.81, tracked early by Flattering Bea with 1-5 favorite Fantastic Style racing four wide in fourth.
Las Flores (G3) winner Fantastic Style moved up to challenge in second around the far turn, but Disco Chick sprinted clear to extend her advantage down the stretch and hit the wire in 1:10.33 over a fast main track.
It was the second straight black-type win for Disco Chick following the My Juliet Stakes May 7 at Parx. Dallas Cowgirl, at 60-1, got up late for second, a length in front of Fantastic Style.
Skipat Stakes Quotes
Winning trainer Mario Serey Jr. (Disco Chick): “We felt really good about our horse coming here for this race. We wanted her to run her during Preakness week if we possibly could. She won at Parx on Derby Day, so we wanted to take a shot. There are a lot of stakes races coming up for her at Belmont, Monmouth, Parx and others.”

Winning Jockey Trevor McCarthy (Disco Chick): “She’s run some awesome races in Maryland. (Trainer Bob) Baffert’s horse was tough, but I said, ‘I’m a few in front and still have some horse left, and I can run away from them.’ I really didn’t let them think they’d let me open up a few lengths. When they let her do that, no one’s going to stop her.”
