Diamond Bachelor Could be a Good One for Biancone
Diamond Bachelor created a bit of a stir around the track when the 2-year-old son of War Front cruised to a 3 ¼-length career debut victory in Thursday’s fifth race, a one mile maiden event on the Jimmy Durante Turf Course.
“He has created a stir around the stable with his training in the morning,” trainer Patrick Biancone said. “It cost quite a bit of money ($570,000) to buy him in the 2-year-old sale (Barretts March) and from there I put him in the program at Pegasus Farm to get him ready for Del Mar and everything has gone well.
“I think he is really a two-turn horse, that’s why I ran him at a mile for his first race. And we’re going to stay two-turns on the turf with him. If everything goes right, we’re going to go with him in the Oak Tree (Juvenile Turf, $100,000, Wednesday, September 4) the mile race.”
Diamond Bachelor is owned by Diamond 100 Racing Club LLC.
Barn Backs Apprentice To Runner-Up
Apprentice jockey Brayan Pena, a 23-year-old native of Guatemala, almost made the most of an opportunity when he finished second on Sophie’s Secret, a half-length behind Beautiful Spirit and Mario Gutierrez, in Friday’s eighth race.
“He has worked for me for three or four years and we decided to give him a shot in the afternoon,” trainer John Sadler said. “He was a little heavy before, but his weight’s down now.
“I think the whole barn (crew) went over to the front side to cheer him on. He ran a good second so we’ll see (about later opportunities).”
