An expected field of eight entrants will take the next step toward the 2018 Preakness Stakes at Wednesday's post position draw.

Pimlico Race Course's operator, The Stronach Group, will host the draw at 5 p.m. ET inside a track chalet with XBTV.com set to broadcast the event live. Expect to get morning line odds as well.

Post positions are far less important in the second leg of the Triple Crown series than in the first, the 20-horse Kentucky Derby. With the race run at 1 3/16 miles, there's also adequate time to establish position in the run up to the first turn.

Here's the last time a horse won the Preakness from Posts 1-8, keeping in mind the race's maximum field size is 14:

1. American Pharoah (2015)

2. Cloud Computing (2017)

3. California Chrome (2014)

4. Curlin (2007)

5. Shackleford (2011)

6. Oxbow (2013)

7. Lookin at Lucky (2010)

8. Bernardini (2006)

American Pharoah's Preakness win also featured just eight starters. Justify, another Bob Baffert trainee, will as with Pharoah eye a Triple Crown sweep should he win Saturday as the Preakness favorite.
