Derby works: Intrepido takes fearless aim at Santa Anita Derby
Intrepido worked six furlongs with jockey Hector Berrios aboard Sunday in preparation for the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby on April 4.
Trained by Jeff Mullins, Intrepido was officially clocked in 1:14.4, though Mullins said he caught the work in a shade under 1:14.
"He had a little company behind him at the start," Mullins said. "We were just looking to get him through another work and come back sound."
Intrepido figures to be among the leading contenders in the 1 1/8-mile Santa Anita Derby. In his only start this year, the Maximus Mischief colt finished second, 3/4 of a length behind the since-sidelined Plutarch, in the Robert B. Lewis (G3) at a mile on Feb. 7. Last year, Intrepido won the American Pharoah (G1) at Santa Anita before finishing in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies after a slow start.
