Derby trail: Deterministic works bullet 8 days out from Wood

Deterministic, winner of the Grade 3 Gotham Stakes on March 2, worked a bullet five furlongs at Payson Park on Friday morning. The Christophe Clement trainee covered the distance in 1:01.6, fastest of five at the trip.

Despite having only two starts, Deterministic is one of the ten shortest prices in Las Vegas leading into the weekend. His best price in those futures markets is 20-1. His only outing as a 2-year-old was a 1/2-length maiden special weight sprint win at Saratoga, where he overcame a slow break to get up in time. The son of Liam's Map began his sophomore season with his win in the Gotham, and he is probable for the Wood Memorial (G2) on April 6.

His previous work was 13 days ago going four furlongs at Fair Grounds. In his last start he placed sixth in the Lecomte (G3) going 1 1/16 miles on the main track at Fair Grounds on Jan. 20 for trainer Mark Casse.

Curlin's Kaos (Clubhouse Ride) worked four furlongs in 51.2 seconds at Santa Anita on Friday morning. It was the 143rd fastest of 151 works at the distance. In his last start he placed fourth in the Sunland Park Derby (G3) going 1 1/16 miles on the main track at Sunland Park on Feb. 18 for trainer Antonio Garcia.
