Derby trail: Deterministic works bullet 8 days out from Wood

Deterministic, winner of the Grade 3 Gotham Stakes on March 2, worked a bullet five furlongs at Payson Park on Friday morning. The Christophe Clement trainee covered the distance in 1:01.6, fastest of five at the trip.

Despite having only two starts, Deterministic is one of the ten shortest prices in Las Vegas leading into the weekend. His best price in those futures markets is 20-1. His only outing as a 2-year-old was a 1/2-length maiden special weight sprint win at Saratoga, where he overcame a slow break to get up in time. The son of Liam's Map began his sophomore season with his win in the Gotham, and he is probable for the Wood Memorial (G2) on April 6.

In his last start he won the Colonel Liam going one mile on the turf at Gulfstream Park on March 2 for trainer Saffie Joseph Jr.

Can Group (Good Samaritan), a Grade 2 winner (2023 Bourbon), worked four furlongs in 49.6 seconds at Churchill Downs on Friday morning. It was the 26th fastest of 30 works at the distance. His previous work was 13 days ago going four furlongs at Fair Grounds. In his last start he placed sixth in the Lecomte (G3) going 1 1/16 miles on the main track at Fair Grounds on Jan. 20 for trainer Mark Casse.

Curlin's Kaos (Clubhouse Ride) worked four furlongs in 51.2 seconds at Santa Anita on Friday morning. It was the 143rd fastest of 151 works at the distance. His previous work was five days ago going five furlongs at Santa Anita. In his last start he placed fourth in the Sunland Park Derby (G3) going 1 1/16 miles on the main track at Sunland Park on Feb. 18 for trainer Antonio Garcia.

Deterministic (Liam's Map), a Grade 3 winner (2024 Gotham), worked five furlongs in 1:01.6 at Payson Park on Friday morning. It was the fastest of five works at the distance. His previous work was eight days ago going five furlongs at Payson Park. In his last start he won the Gotham (G3) going one mile on the main track at Aqueduct on March 2 for trainer Christophe Clement.

Gettysburg Address (Constitution) worked five furlongs in 1:00.4 at Churchill Downs on Friday morning. It was the sixth fastest of 18 works at the distance. This was his first work since his last race. In his last start he placed third in an allowance race going one mile on the synthetic at Turfway Park on March 8 for trainer Brad Cox.

Guy Named Joe (American Pharoah) worked five furlongs in 1:01.0 at Santa Anita on Friday morning. It was the 52nd fastest of 124 works at the distance. This was his first work since his last race. In his last start he placed second in the Pasadena going one mile on the turf at Santa Anita on March 16 for trainer Doug O'Neill.

Holiday Pay (Awesome Slew) worked three furlongs in 36.8 seconds at Palm Meadows on Friday morning. It was the sixth fastest of 13 works at the distance. His previous work was 20 days ago going three furlongs at Palm Meadows. In his last start he placed third in an allowance race going six furlongs on the main track at Gulfstream Park on Jan. 26 for trainer Saffie Joseph Jr.

Refocus (Pavel) worked five furlongs in 1:00.8 at Santa Anita on Friday morning. It was the 37th fastest of 124 works at the distance. His previous work was six days ago going five furlongs at Santa Anita. In his last start he won an allowance race going six furlongs on the main track at Santa Anita on March 4 for trainer Doug O'Neill.

Secret Chat (Union Rags) worked five furlongs in 1:00.2 at Palm Meadows on Friday morning. It was the second fastest of five works at the distance. This was his first work since his last race. In his last start he placed second in an allowance race going six furlongs on the main track at Gulfstream Park on March 15 for trainer Roderick Rodriguez.

In his last start he won the San Felipe (G2) going 1 1/16 miles on the main track at Santa Anita on March 3 for trainer Bob Baffert.

Mirahmadi (Into Mischief) worked four furlongs in 49.0 seconds at Los Alamitos on Friday morning. It was the 18th fastest of 26 works at the distance. His previous work was 42 days ago going three furlongs at Los Alamitos. In his last start he placed second in the Del Mar Futurity (G1) going seven furlongs on the main track at Del Mar on Sept. 10 for trainer Bob Baffert.

Wynstock (Solomini), a Grade 2 winner (2023 Los Alamitos Futurity), worked four furlongs in 46.0 seconds at Santa Anita on Friday morning. It was the fastest of 151 works at the distance. His previous work was seven days ago going six furlongs at Santa Anita. In his last start he placed 11th in the Southwest (G3) going 1 1/16 miles on the main track at Oaklawn on Feb. 3 for trainer Bob Baffert.
