Derby Alumni: See who just raced, and who is in action soon

Two horses from the 2022 Kentucky Derby recently returned in winning form. Mo Donegal moved forward from his fifth-place finish in the Kentucky Derby and scored a decisive three-length Belmont victory. Back at Churchill Downs, Cyberknife bounced back from an 18th-place finish in the Kentucky Derby, winning by a gritty nose over Howling Time in the Matt Winn (G3). In third, six lengths behind Cyberknife, was Kentucky Derby scratch Rattle N Roll.

Happy Jack, who contested both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness, may get a class break Sunday at Churchill Downs. He is entered to face allowance optional claiming company, under the first-level condition, though he is on the also-eligible list and needs one scratch to draw in.

Among the 2021 Kentucky Derby runners, Dynamic One has come into his own as a four-year-old. And, after hitting the board behind Scalding in a pair of races earlier in the year, he turned the tables to win the Blame by a length on June 4.

Fan favorite Hot Rod Charlie has entered to make his first start of his summer campaign June 18 at Monmouth, in the Salvator Mile (G3), where he will face fellow Kentucky Derby alumnus Helium.

Looking back to 2020 Kentucky Derby runners, Max Player stretched out to a mile and a half in the Brooklyn (G2) on the Belmont Stakes undercard June 11. Though he won the Suburban (G1) last year over the course, he did not come as strongly in the Brooklyn this year, finishing sixth behind Fearless. Necker Island shortened up to a sprint on June 4 for the Aristides and kept on with good interest to finish second, 2 1/2 lengths behind Bango.

2019 is the earliest year with Kentucky Derby runners still in training. Saturday Tax makes his long-awaited return in the Monmouth Stakes (G3), his first start since finishing 10th in the 2021 Pegasus World Cup (G1).

Long Range Toddy has cut back to a sprint for most of his six-year-old campaign so far; he finished fourth in the Aristides on June 4 at Churchill Downs, though he was only two noses behind 2020 Derby runner Necker Island in second. On June 5 Gray Magician finished fourth at Santa Anita and was claimed to the barn of Mark Glatt from that race.
