A veteran horseplayer, with more than 50 years of handicapping under his belt, John Krause or fallingskys, as he’s known in the DerbyWars world, managed to take home the winner's share of the $25,000 High Stakes Game last weekend on DerbyWars.

Krause admits that, while an avid horseracing fan, he has not had a lot of success in the past. "It is a very tough game," he said. He does, however, see a lot of advantages in playing in the DerbyWars tournaments. "I love the fact that a relatively small investment can produce big dividends" he said.

Krause points out that the strategy to winning a tournament elevates the experience from a horseplayer's typical, long-term approach. He advised that it is important "to remember that you are competing against other players not necessarily other horses."

Using that tactic, Krause said that he got on board early with favorites and lower-priced contenders to get the ball rolling. He noted that the "earlier races seem easier to handicap and getting on board sets tempo as in any other contest."

From that starting point, Krause said he adjusted his selections based on his position on the leaderboard: "Can't bet all favorites, can't bet all longshots."

"I love the fact that a relatively small investment can produce big dividends."

Krause mentions that it is still important to focus on each individual race. "I use racing data as a way to "interview" horses, trainers, jockeys, and owners to assess the probability of coming in first or second," he said.

Going into the last race of the contest, Krause held a $5.50 lead over the second-place contender, which he said was important to his final selection. "Making a selection that players behind you are likely to make," he said, "can be as a good a win."

Indeed, as his final selection failed hit the board, he held his lead due to the fact that five other players in the top ten had made the same selection.

Of 125 players in the weekend's high stakes tournament, Krause picked six winners and two runners-up in the 13-race tournament to earn a winning total of $123.80.

"I use racing data as a way to 'interview' horses ... to assess the probability of coming in first or second."

Krause started out strong, selecting three first- and two second-place finishers. His next three picks finished off the board, but the Krause bounced back quickly. The eventual winner took the lead, selecting well-priced winners in the next three races - including his biggest score of the day, the 15-1 Warren's Assassin in a claiming event at Los Alamitos.

Krause's next two picks proved lucrative as well, cashing in for $20.90 and $17.80, respectively on the mid-priced winners of the later stakes legs: Minorette in the Belmont Oaks at 6-1 and Irish You Well in the Long Branch at 5-1.

For his win, Krause earned the $10,000 winner's prize, as well as a free entry into the upcoming $100K High Stakes Game, worth an additional $875.

"Your site provides a lot of action for a small investment," Krause said. "Short term failures can be overcome without additional capital outlay in any given tournament. Thanks again!"
