Claiborne Farm and Adele Dilschneider’s Departing, the likely favorite for Saturday’s closing-day $200,000 Hagyard Fayette (G2) at 1 1/8 miles on the main track, completed his major preparation for the race with a half-mile work in :48.80 over a fast track at Churchill Downs Sunday morning.
“We wanted him to go in :48 or :49ish and he hit it right on the button with a good gallop out,” said trainer Al Stall Jr., who won the 2009 renewal of the race with Blame. “He got a lot out of his last race at Churchill (a runner-up finish in the Homecoming Classic in his first race in eight weeks).”
Stall said Departing would ship to Keeneland for the race on Saturday.
Entries for the Hagyard Fayette will be taken Wednesday. Among the horses considered as probable for the race is My Meadowview Farm’s Stephanoatsee, who worked a half-mile in :48.40 at Keeneland on Saturday for trainer Nick Zito.
Other probables for the race are Call Me George, Coltimus Prime, Long River and Pick of the Litter, with Code West, Ground Transport and Mr. Commons considered as possible starters.
