Delaware Park opens Wednesday for 85-day meet
Delaware Park will open for its 86th season Wednesday, the start of an 85-day meet that runs through Oct. 28.
Post time Wednesday is 12:30 p.m. EDT, and eight races are on the card.
Live racing generally will be conducted from Wednesdays through Saturdays. On opening weekend, racing will not be held on Friday, and that’s also the case for July 28 through Aug. 25 plus Oct. 27.
The Delaware Oaks (G3) is scheduled for Saturday, July 1, and the Delaware Handicap (G2) will be run Saturday, July 8. The twin 3-year-old turf route features of the Kent Stakes for the boys and the Christiana for the girls will be contested on Saturday, July 15.
The top trainer at last year’s meet was Jamie Ness, with 66 wins from 254 starts and earnings of $1,967,530. Cathal Lynch was next in the number of wins, with 32 from 99 starts. He has six entries Wednesday.
Jaime Rodriguez won the jockey title, with a record of 491: 134-106-88 and earnings of $3,599,147. He has seven mounts Wednesday.
The owners with the most wins were Runnymore Racing, with 14 wins from 37 starts, and Bell Gable Stable, with 14 wins from 106 starts.
Delaware Park will offer National Horseplayers Championship qualifying handicapping contests on July 15 and Sept. 9. For more information, visit the Delaware Park website.
