Delaware Park: 3 riders are involved as injured horse falls
Three riders were involved when a horse fell with an apparent injury Thursday at Delaware Park.
The spill occurred in the sixth race, a one-mile claiming race for 3-year-olds and up. Cardinale, the even-money favorite ridden by Martin Chuan, was in the lead in the stretch but appeared to sustain an injury and fell around the sixteenth pole, according to the Equibase chart. The 4-year-old colt was transported off the track in an equine ambulance and later euthanized, Delaware Park spokesman Chris Sobocinski said.
Two horses threw their riders trying to avoid the fallen horse, according to the chart. They were Aspiring Comedian, with Gabriel Maldonado riding, and Silent Roar, ridden by Jose Mauricio.
Maldonado and Mauricio were taken to a hospital for evaluation, Sobocinski said. Maldonado's agent, Eddie Joe Zambrana, said he was at the hospital but had not received word of the jockey's condition.
Chuan was unharmed, according to his agent, John Weilbacher, and he rode in the eighth race.
