Delaunay Romps to Aristides Victory
Heavily favored in the 26th running of the Grade 3 Aristides at Churchill Downs, Maggi Moss's Delaunay proved up to the task, easily brushing off rivals for the win.
Under jockey Rosie Napravnik, Delaunay settled behind the early leader, Jasizzle, before taking command of the eight-horse field going into the turn, pressing a sharp pace of :21.46, :44.96 and :56.67. The 7-year-old gelding finished the six furlongs in 1:09.59 under a hand ride to win by three lengths.
Scatman, last year's Aristides winner, rallied late to secure the second-place finish and Captain Genius followed well to run third. Mico Margarita finished fourth.
Trained by Tom Amoss, Delaunay was bred in Maryland by Fitzhugh LLC, the son of Smoke Glacken and Perilous Night by Coronado's Quest pushes his career record to 16 wins, 10 seconds and three thirds from 45 starts with earnings of more than $970,000.
Evidently well-suited to the surface at Churchill Downs, Delaunay has won five of his six starts at the track, only missing the board in his last time out with a fifth-place finish in the Grade 2, Churchill Downs Stakes on Kentucky Derby day.
