A third-place finisher in his first two stakes starts, Proletariat led at every call Friday on his way to winning by 5 3/4 lengths in the listed, $150,000 Oceanside Handicap, a two-turn, turf mile on opening day of the 89th annual Del Mar summer meet.

Owned by Dutch Girl Holdings and Irving Ventures and trained by Jeff Mullins, the Raging Bull gelding raced through fractions of 22.49, 46.63, 1:10.76 and 1:22.21 on his way to a winning time of 1:33.54 in the feature that was run with 11 3-year-olds on firm going.

Ridden as always by Kyle Frey, Proletariat (6-1) carried 119 pounds on his way to the victory that paid $14.80, $5.40 and $3.80. Runner-up Secured Freedom (16-1), with 121 pounds, closed from mid-pack to finish second and returned $12.00 and $9.40. Post-time favorite Mr. A. P., with 119, stalked and came in third to pay $4.00.

Bought last year for $200,000 at the Ocala Breeders’ Sales March auction, Proletariat broke his maiden on second asking at Del Mar when he made his turf debut Aug. 1. He finished his 2-year-old campaign with third-place results in the Del Mar Juvenile Turf (G3) at Del Mar and the Zuma Beach (G3) at Santa Anita.

After a seven-month break, Proletariat won an $80,000 allowance race covering six furlongs May 15 on the Santa Anita turf.

Out of Kodiac mare Kodiak West, Proletariat upped his record to 6: 3-0-3. With the first-place money of $90,000, his career earnings total $209,400.
