Del Mar Futurity fair odds: No question, Prince of Monaco rules
Prince of Monaco is 2-5 on the morning line to win the Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity, and I agree that is the right price on this impressive 2-year-old to run his unbeaten streak to three against what appear to be six overmatched rivals.
It would not surprise me to see the Speightstown colt be 1-5 or even 1-10. He really has been that impressive. Conventional wisdom indicates that if a horse who should be 2-5 is 1-5 or 1-10 then there is value on others as their price drifts up, but I just can't get excited about taking a shot against this horse on top.
If the betting gets really crazy and No. 4 Raging Torrent is something like 10-1 (or longer) then a case could be made for an action bet.
No. 5 Rothschild is interesting as a long-term Breeders' Cup-Triple Crown prospect by virtue of his breeding (by Uncle Mo out of a Union Rags mare). But I think that against this group going seven furlongs with some speed signed on, the race sets up too well for the big favorite who has been faster anyway.
No. 3 Mirahmadi's presence is interesting given he is winless in three starts while burning money at 3-5, 7-5 and 7-10. I have to think he's in here to ensure a target for his uncoupled stablemate Prince of Monaco.
The wild card is No. 2 Valiant Knight. Although I see him as the least likely winner of the Del Mar Futurity, he is not a futile underneath candidate. If there were head-to-head wagering on this race, then I would take the "+" side of him versus Mirahmadi, and I don't think he's impossible for third.
