Del Mar 2024: Medoro tries to remain perfect in San Clemente

Undefeated with a graded-stakes victory to her name, Medoro will try to run her record to 5-for-5 when she races Saturday in the Grade 2, $200,000 San Clemente Handicap, the one-mile turf feature for 3-year-old fillies on opening day at Del Mar.

Owned by Lee and Susan Searing’s C R K Stable and trained by Peter Eurton, the daughter of Honor Code will be ridden as usual by Antonio Fresu, this time from post 10 in the field of 12. Medoro will carry the top weight of 124 pounds.

Last out April 20, Medoro stalked the early pace and came out of a stretch duel as a half-length winner in the one-mile Providencia (G3) at Santa Anita. The performance was worth a Beyer Speed Figure of 80, according to Daily Racing Form.

Eurton also saddles Flattery, who was 2-for-2 last summer at Del Mar on the way to a 12th-place finish at 40-1 in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Santa Anita. She began her 2024 campaign by finishing eighth in the May 5 running of the Señorita (G3), about a 6 1/2-furlong turf sprint at Santa Anita. As part of a 119-pound impost, Reylu Gutiérrez will ride the Flatter filly from post 11.

Zona Verde, who won the Jimmy Durante (G3) in December over the same course and distance as the San Clemente, leads the three-horse string entered by Phil D’Amato. The winner of five consecutive Del Mar summer and fall training titles also has recent maiden winner and 2023 stakes runner-up Loterie and 2-for-2 allowance victor Iscreamuscream in the field.

Antifona, a six-time stakes starter who won the Sweet Life over Zona Verde in February at Santa Anita, comes in off her bumpy, sixth-place effort in the Señorita. Bred and raced early in her career in France, she is 13: 3-2-1 with a 6: 1-0-1 record for her current trainer John Sadler.

Señorita runner-up Rascality, who broke her maiden on her third try during the Santa Anita winter, races for Richard Mandella. The Hall of Fame trainer also entered Alluring, another maiden winner who was seventh in the Señorita.

Honeymoon (G3) runner-up Sakura Blossom, last year’s Hallandale Beach victor Omaha Girl and allowance winners Sea Dancer and Invincible Molly also are in the field.

Scheduled to be run shortly after 9 p.m. EDT on Saturday, the San Clemente is the ninth of 11 races on a card that begins at the traditional Del Mar starting time of 5 p.m. EDT.
