Dean's Kitten Heads Hawthorne Derby

Dean's Kitten, owned by Ken and Sarah Ramsey, has been installed as the lukewarm 7-2 morning line favorite in the $150,000 Hawthorne Derby (gr. IIIT). Eight 3-year-olds were entered in the 1 1/8-mile turf event.

Dean’s Kitten is one of three in the Hawthorne Derby that chased Paddy O'Prado in their last start, the Secretariat Stakes (gr. IT) at Arlington Park Aug. 21. Trained by Michael Maker, the son of Kitten's Joy has won just one of seven starts in 2010, taking the Lanes End Stakes (gr. II) March 27 on Turfway Park's Polytrack.

However, Dean's Kitten, who was fifth in the Secretariat, has the late-running style that should benefit from Hawthorne’s long stretch run. The chestnut colt has an overall record is 3-1-2 in 15 races with earnings of $456,715, taking two of 11 tries on turf. Victor Lebron comes in to ride and they will break from post 5 with co-high weight of 122 pounds.
