Strong numbers from the first three sessions of the Keeneland January horses of all ages sale will assure improved total sales and average price compared with last year's totals, but the five-day sale saw a slight drop in figures Jan. 10.
While not a perfect comparison with 2012, which offered a four-day sale, fourth session total sales declined 6.38% to $3,389,600. Average was off 4.49% to $13,668, and median was down 17.65% to $7,000.
"Session to session it was a little less, nothing much," said Keeneland direct of sales Geoffrey Russell. "If they have a reason to buy them they do; and if they don't, it's pretty tough sledding."
