David Cabrera breaks femur in Thursday spill at Remington
Jockey David Cabrera is having surgery Friday afternoon for a broken femur after a spill Thursday night at Remington Park.
Cabrera was riding Outlining, the 6-5 favorite in Thursday's seventh race at Remington, an allowance-level turf mile for fillies and mares. Outlining was drifting out while chasing leader Wild Express, clear of the remainder of the field. She unseated Cabrera near the sixteenth mark while staying on her own feet and continuing to drift out. The rest of the horses were able to avoid Cabrera when he was down on the turf.
According to a tweet from his agent Jose Santos Jr., Cabrera was taken to the hospital after the fall, where he was diagnosed with a broken femur but described by Santos as being in good spirits. He is scheduled to have surgery for the broken femur at 2:00 p.m. EDT at University of Oklahoma Medical Center.
Cabrera has been riding since 2013, with 1,708 wins in 10,057 career starts. This year he has won 85 times in 680 starts, with over $3.9 million in earnings. He has won two graded races in that time: the 2020 Remington Park Oaks (G3) with Envoutante and the 2022 Essex Handicap (G3) with Rated R Superstar.
