Danzing Candy strolls in the Lone Star Park Handicap
Mike Smith rides Danzing Candy to an easy unchallenged win by four and a half lengths in Sunday’s Lone Star Park Handicap. Shotgun Kowboy got within a length of the winner at the half, but no closer, while Texas Chrome tracked behind him going by in the stretch, but couldn’t catch the winner. Fractions were 47.97 and 1:12.01 for a final time of 1:43.01 over a muddy track.
“I tried to get out off the fence a little bit where we weren’t hurting ourselves or bothering anyone else,” said winning jockey Mike Smith. “We were fortunate enough that he’s quick enough to get a clear lead out to the four path and decided to stay there the whole race.”
This was the third Lone Star Park Handicap win for trainer Bob Baffert. He won previously with Bob and John in 2009 and Congaree in 2002. This was his 21ststakes win at the Grand Prairie Track.
This was the second career stakes win for the 4-yr-old son of Twirling Candy. He won the Grade 2 San Felipe last year. Today’s victory was his fifth from 10 career starts, and it put him past the million-dollar mark to $550,930 for owners Halo Farms and Jim & Diane Bashor.
Full order of finish was Danzing Candy; Texas Chrome; Shotgun Cowboy; Neck ’n Neck and Carouse.
