Barbara Banke’s Stonestreet paid $320,000 for the broodmare Emerald Gal, dam of recent Grade 2 winner Sarah Sis, and spent $260,000 for a weanling colt by Curlin to secure the two top-priced horses of Friday’s fifth session of the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale.

Through the first five days of the 12-day sale, Keeneland has sold 968 horses for $178,778,000, up 7.41 percent from the corresponding period in 2014 when 1,046 horses brought $166,443,000. The average price of $184,688 stands 16.07 percent higher than the $159,123 in 2014, while the median of $100,000 is up 11.11 percent over last year’s $90,000.

For the session, 236 horses sold for a total of $14,099,000, down 9.26 percent from last year’s session gross of $15,538,500 for 257 horses. The average price of $59,742 was similar to the $60,461 posted in 2014. The median of $45,000 was 10 percent lower than last year’s $50,000.

Consigned by Select Sales, agent, the session-topping Emerald Gal is the dam of Sarah Sis, a multiple graded stakes winner who won the Lexus Raven Run (G2) on Oct. 17 at Keeneland. Emerald Gal is a 9-year-old winning daughter of Gilded Time out of the End Sweep mare Wancha Back. She was sold in foal to Street Sense.

A weanling son of Curlin fetched the day’s second-highest price of $260,000 from Stonestreet. Out of the Tale of the Cat mare Chaotic Cat, the colt’s second dam is stakes winner Joyful Chaos, who holds the course record for 1 3/16 miles at Keeneland. He was consigned by Bluewater Sales, agent.

Circle the Empire, a 4-year-old Empire Maker mare in foal to Strong Mandate, brought a final bid of $250,000 from BBA Ireland. Three Chimneys Farm, agent, consigned the mare, who is from the family of undefeated multiple Group 1 winner Air Force Blue and champions Flanders and Surfside.

The session’s leading consignor was Bluewater Sales, which sold 18 horses for $2,094,000.

The leading buyer was Calumet, which purchased six horses for $559,000.
