Looking for his first victory since winning the Grade 1 Carter Handicap at Aqueduct Racetrack in April 2015, Vincent Scuderi's Dads Caps will take on six competitors when he enters the starting gate for the $100,000 Diablo Stakes at six furlongs in Sunday's feature race at Belmont Park.
Making his last five starts against graded stakes competition, including a third-place finish last out unsuccessfully defending his title in the Carter on April 9, the 6-year-old son of Discreet Cat will look to gain some class relief.
The Rudy Rodriguez trainee, known for his front-running style, breezed five furlongs in a bullet 1:01.01 on April 29 at Aqueduct in his final preparation for the race.
The 2-1 morning-line favorite, Dads Caps will leave from post position 6 with Irad Ortiz, Jr. in the irons.
Chalk Racing's Ready for Rye, who emerged last summer as a formidable runner on both dirt and turf surfaces wheeling off three victories at one point, will seek his first win since September 13 at Belmont in the Allied Forces Stakes. Under the care of trainer Tom Albertrani, the 4-year-old son of City Zip enters the Diablo coming off a second-place finish on April 9 at Keeneland in the Grade 3 Commonwealth Stakes.
Drawing post 5 as the 5-2 morning-line second-choice, Ready for Rye will retain the services of Javier Castellano for the mount.
With six wins from 15 starts at the distance, grizzly 6-year-old veteran Stallwalkin' Dude will enter from the barn of owner and trainer David Jacobson. Last out, he raced four-wide to finish fifth in the Grade 1 Carter. Previously, he won on March 21 at Parx in an allowance race while picking up a 97 Beyer Speed Figure.
With odds of 6-1 on the morning line, Stallwalkin' Dude will leave from the rail with Cornelio Velasquez aboard.
Rounding out the field are Green Gratto for owner and trainer Gaston Grant, who will look to improve following a subpar eighth-place finish in the Grade 1 Carter; Mewannarose for trainer Chris Englehart and owner William Fuccillo, who last out finished fourth on March 12 in the Grade 3 Tom Fool at Aqueduct; El Deal for trainer Andrew Lakeman and Passion Stable Ink who captured the Gold Fever Stakes at Belmont last year, and Joking for owner and trainer Charlton Baker, coming in off a 1 ¼ length victory an optional-claimer at Aqueduct on April 13.
