Daddy Nose Best Heads Eddie Logan
The $75,000 Eddie Logan Stakes at one mile on turf, attracted a cast
of nine 2-year-olds headed by trainer Steve Asmussen’s Daddy Nose Best.
Asmussen won last year’s Logan with the highly regarded Silver
Medallion.
A son of Scat Daddy, Daddy Nose Best will be joined by regular
rider Julien Leparoux as he makes his West Coast debut following a 3
¼-length allowance race victory on Nov. 26 at one mile over Churchill
Downs’ turf course.
The colt, owned by Bob and Cathy Zollars, previously turned in a
creditable effort in the Grade I Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf at
Churchill Downs on Nov. 5. He finished sixth, 3 ¾ lengths behind the
winner, Wrote, despite being rank early, racing wide and getting bumped
in the stretch. He will carry 120 pounds and break from post position
No. 8.
High weight in the field at 122 pounds is Stoney Fleece, who is
being wheeled back by Sadler following a fifth-place finish as the 2-1
favorite in the $100,000 California Breeders’ Champion Stakes on Santa
Anita’s opening day, Dec. 26. Corey Nakatani was named to replace
Rosario in the saddle. Stoney Fleece broke awkwardly on Monday and
flattened out late in the seven-furlong event. He previously had won
Hollywood Park’s Grade III Generous Stakes at one-mile on turf in late
November.
The complete field for the Eddie Logan Stakes, with jockeys and weights in post position order: Sheer Talent, Gomez, 116; Devil in Disguise, Mario Gutierrez, 116; Smart Ellis, Espinoza, 116; Champions Gate, Rosario, 118; Stoney Fleece, Corey Nakatani, 122; Chips All In, Alonso Quinonez, 118; Fear the Beard, Berrios, 116; Daddy Nose Best, Julien Leparoux, 120, and The Black, Brice Blanc, 116.
