Starlight Racing's Cutting Humor, last seen on the track when 10th in the 2019 Kentucky Derby, will kick off his 4-year-old campaign Saturday in an allowance optional claiming race at Gulfstream Park.
The Sunland Derby (G3) winner will have regular rider John Velazquez back in the saddle for trainer Todd Pletcher to face 11 rivals at the 1 1/16-mile distance.
Whereas Velazquez rode Cutting Humor along the Derby trail, Mike Smith inherited the mount aboard the son of First Samurai on the first Saturday in May.
Cutting Humor drew the No. 10 post in Race 9, with post time 4:06 p.m. ET.
“It’s pretty cool to see him coming back and good that he’s eligible for the allowance condition,” said Jack Wolf, co-founder of Starlight Racing.
A winner of two races in seven career starts, the $400,000 yearling purchase has earned $516,967 thus far. Since exiting the Derby with a bone chip that required surgery, Cutting Humor resumed breezing in October at south Florida's Palm Beach Downs.
Cutting Humor finished second to Bourbon War in an allowance optional claiming race on Jan. 18, 2019, going the same distance in his only prior start at Gulfstream.
“Other than the fact that he’s pulled a bad post position," Wolf said, "I think he should run pretty well."
