British Idiom's Rachel Alexandra effort 'fantastic' off the layoff

Although they didn’t end up in the winner’s circle after the Rachel Alexandra Stakes (G2), trainer Brad Cox and co-owner Michael Dubb remained upbeat after champion filly British Idiom finished behind  Finite in her 2020 debut.

“We’re very, very happy with British Idiom,” said Dubb, who owns the filly in partnership with The Elkstone Group LLC, Madaket Stables LLC and Bethlehem Stables LLC. “The other horse had a lot more seasoning. While we would’ve liked to have won, it’s not our ultimate objective. So we’re very proud of British Idiom.”

A daughter of Flashback, British Idiom entered 3-for-3 with wins on debut, in Keeneland's Alcibiades (G1) and in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies. But she also hadn't run since Nov. 1.

Given that, “it was a fantastic effort on her behalf,” said trainer Brad Cox, reiterated that the classy Finite “has had three races since we’ve run our last race.”
“I’m very pleased with our filly,” Cox continued. “She had a wide trip on both the turns. She got a little tired late.”

Keeneland's Ashland (G1) or the Fair Grounds Oaks (G2) remain possible for British Idiom’s next race, with the goal being the Kentucky Oaks on May 1.

It's a path potentially mirroring the 2018 Kentucky Oaks heroine Monomoy Girl. Trained by Cox, she won the Rachel Alexandra and Ashland on her way to Churchill Downs.
