Cox hopes to keep Derby week momentum rolling

Trainer Brad Cox was a regular to the G.H.Mumm Winner’s Circle on Kentucky Derby weekend with three stakes victories: Benner Island in the Eight Belles (Grade II), Green Mask in the Twin Spires Turf Sprint (GIII) and Arklow in the American Turf (GII).
“I’m very proud of what our whole stable accomplished,” Cox said. “It was nice to be able to do so well Derby week but we need to keep the momentum rolling. This is our home track so it’s always good to win at home.”
Cox is planning to run all three stakes winners at Belmont Park for their next start.
“We’ll take a look at the Acorn (GI) for Benner Island. She ran a great race in the Eight Belles but we’ll see how she does stretching out. Green Mask ran a great race in the (Twin Spires) Turf Sprint. We’ll enter him in the Jaipur (GIII),” Cox said.
The Acorn and Jaipur are on the undercard of the June 10 Belmont Stakes (GI) program.
“I never really expected Arklow to run that big,” Cox continued. “It was a huge step forward for him only having one prior on the grass. I’d love to run him in the (July 8) Belmont Derby (GI) which could eventually lead to the Secretariat (GI) at Arlington Park.”
Cox was tied at the top of the trainer standings with Steve Asmussen and J.R. Caldwell with five victories through the first eight days of the 38-day Spring Meet.
MEMORIAL SERVICE FOR TRAINER LYNN WHITING SET FOR MONDAY AT 2 P.M. – The memorial service for late Kentucky Derby-winning trainer Lynn Whiting has been set for Monday (May 15) at 2 p.m. EDT and will be held in Churchill Downs’ Triple Crown Room in the Jockey Club Suites.
Whiting, a second-generation horseman who raced primarily at tracks in Kentucky and Arkansas best-known for his victory in the 1992 Kentucky Derby with W.C. Partee’s Lil E. Tee, died April 19 in Louisville at age 77 only days after his return to his Barn 18 at Churchill Downs following weeks of hospital and rehabilitation care.
A native of Great Falls, Mon., the soft-spoken Whiting was highly-regarded by his peers as a patient, skilled and accomplished horseman who possessed a keen eye for potential in young horses. His Kentucky Derby winner was the best-known example of the latter, as he was purchased privately by Partee during the colt’s 2-year-old season for $200,000.
Whiting, who saddled 319 winners at Churchill Downs to rank 16th all-time at the Louisville, Ky. racetrack, learned his craft from his father, Lyle Whiting, a one-time jockey and longtime trainer.
Overall, Lynn Whiting won 1,279 races and $23.9 million in prize money from 6,113 starts as trainer since he saddled his first winner in February of 1969 at the now-defunct Lincoln Downs in Rhode Island. His final victory came with Jury Wise on March 10 at Oaklawn Park.
Whiting is survived by his wife, Nell, and daughters Carrie and Lori.
WORK TAB – On a morning where 90 horses filled the Churchill Downs work tab, trainer Dallas Stewart’s Grade I winning mare Forever Unbridled put in her first official work following her third-place effort behind Beholder in the Nov. 4 Breeders’ Cup Distaff (GI). The homebred daughter of Unbridled’s Song breezed three furlongs in :37. … John Gunther’s Tiger Moth, who is scheduled to run in next Saturday’s Matron Stakes (GIII) at Churchill Downs, breezed a half-mile in :48.20. … Roxelana winner Finley’sluckycharm returned to the work tab breezing a half-mile in :48.80 for trainer Bret Calhoun. … Multiple graded stakes winner Chocolate Ride breezed an easy half-mile in :49.80 after the renovation break for trainer Brad Cox.
DOWN THE STRETCH – Clairenation, who was the 4-1 second choice in Saturday’s Unbridled Sidney, scratched and is expected to return in allowance company in the next couple weeks. … The Single 6 Jackpot was hit Friday by one winning ticket for $7,241.78. The jackpot will start over Saturday. … Julien Leparoux will ride the Tom Albertrani-trained Sadler’s Joy on Saturday at Belmont Park in the $400,000 Man o’ War (GI). He also will pilot the Arnaud Delacour-trained Hawkmoor (Ire) in the $150,000 Beaugay (GIII) – her first race since finishing sixth in last fall’s Mrs. Revere (GII) at Churchill Downs. … Nominations for the Louisville Handicap (GIII) and Matron (GIII) closed Wednesday. Both races headline next Saturday’s 11-race card at Churchill Downs. … Churchill Downs is offering free General Admission for all mothers on Sunday for Mother’s Day.
