Commissioner's first foal is a filly

WinStar Farm’s Commissioner, A.P. Indy’s last Classic-placed son to retire to stud, sired his first reported foal on Jan. 5th when a bay filly was born at Taylor Made Farm in Nicholasville, KY.

 

Bred by Denny Andrews and Taylor Brother properties, the filly is out of the Afleet Alex mare She’s a Fleet, a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Mona de Momma and from the immediate family of Mr. Greeley and Street Sense.

 

“This filly was 146 pounds at birth. She’s a big, strong, racy filly,” said Taylor Made’s Stuart Angus.

 

Commissioner became A.P. Indy’s last Classic-placed 3-year-old when he set the pace and led until the final yards of the last jewel of the 2014 Triple Crown – the Belmont S. (G1). The WinStar homebred finished as the runner-up by a head to multiple Grade 1 winner Tonalist, and defeated Grade 1 winners California Chrome and Wicked Strong.

The regally-bred Commissioner was a three-time Graded stakes winner, with his biggest career victory coming in the Hawthorne Gold Cup (G2) in his final start before retiring to WinStar with career earnings of $962,237. He also won the Pimlico Special S. (G3) and Gulfstream’s Skip Away S. (G3), earning a career-high 109 Beyer in the latter.

 

“We bred Commissioner with the hopes of winning a Classic, and he nearly pulled it off. He’s always been a WinStar favorite from the day he was born,” said Elliott Walden, WinStar President & CEO. “Commissioner has a combination of looks, pedigree and race record that gives him a license to be any kind of sire, and we’re excited about his first crop of foals.”

 

Commissioner is out of the multiple Graded-stakes producer and multiple stakes-winning race mare, Flaming Heart, by Touch Gold, and is a half-brother to 2013 Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1) runner-up Laugh Track. Commissioner bred 154 mares in his first book in 2016, and is set to stand his second season at WinStar for a fee of $7,500 stands and nurses.
