Colormesaichi Seeks Sorority Upset

The morning line may read 8-1, but the running style could be 1-9 for Colormesaichi in Monday’s $100,000 Sorority Stakes.

In a race that has drawn six 2-year-old fillies, all have shown a good flash of foot out of the gate – all except one, Colormesaichi.

“It certainly doesn’t hurt that the race is loaded with speed,” said Terri Pompay, who conditions the filly for My Purple Haze Stables.  “We weren’t necessarily going to be that far back in her debut.  I told the jockey (C. H. Marquez Jr.) to break and get her comfortable.  I imagine with all the speed in the race, we’ll be looking to do the same thing on Monday.”

Colormesaichi made her debut on Aug. 21 at Monmouth going 5 ½ furlongs.  She broke seventh in the field of 10, was four lengths off the lead turning for home and then kicked it in late in the lane to post a half-length win going away.

“She had been sick a couple of weeks before her first race,” Pompay said.  “I wasn’t training her as hard as I normally would because of that, but it didn’t seem to matter, she ran great.  I was real impressed with her race.

“She’s coming back off a short rest, but she’s been training great.  I think she’ll improve off that first effort.”

A homebred daughter of Fusaichi Pegasus from the Mr. Greeley mare Colormein, Colormesaichi was bred in the state of Florida by Wanda Polisseni, proprietor of My Purple Haze Stables and campaigner of the dam.

“I trained Colormein,” Pompay said.  “She was real nice.  We thought she’d have a bright future, but right after she broke her maiden she came up with a tendon and that was that.  The owner certainly thought enough of her to breed her and this filly was the result.”

With C.H. Marquez Jr. back aboard, Colormesaichi will break from post five in the six-furlong Sorority.
