Colonial Downs: Hat trick for Ferris Allen

’08 Colonial Downs leading conditioner Ferris Allen, III has his sights on yet another training title as he took home three wins on Wednesday’s card.

Opening the card was Queen of the Turf, a Linda Harding-owned eight year old mare who settled off the rail before advancing nearing the quarter pole under Horacio Karamanos. In the final 3/16ths, she was able to swing out from behind rivals and close determinedly, overtaking Nena Bella by ¾ of a length as the favorite. The win was Queen of the Turf’s fifth on the board finish in six tries at Colonial.

In the seventh race, Ferris Allen saw Horacio Karamanos guide Right of Way to a thrilling win. After stalking the early pace while saving ground, the four year old Belong To Me gelding moved three wide at the quarter pole and engaged with Earlswood Pete in a stretch duel, narrowly winning by a head. Swampy Town brought up the show position 6 ½ lengths behind, with Watch Tower rounding out the field.

Ferris Allen also found the winners’ circle in the eighth race, when A Fleet Spirit broke his maiden on second asking under Eric Camacho. The three year old Northern Afleet colt ran to a clear three-length lead in the early going, opened up leaving the far turn, and dug in to win by 1 ¾ lengths over favorite Buster Douglas. Profitable, with Luis Garcia up, finished third.

Colonial Downs presents an eleven-race card on Saturday, June 12th, featuring the $50,000 Da Hoss Stakes for three year olds and up. First post time is 12:55 PM.
