Colonial Downs: Four Bagger for Ramirez
Jockey Josean Ramirez won three straight at Colonial Downs in the middle of the card on Saturday for a natural hat-trick and came away with a fourth win later in the card.
Ramirez’s first win came in the fourth race atop Kentucky-bred Bavarian. From the start Bavarian stalked position off the rail then moved between rivals into the lane. Past the furlong pole the John J. Robb-trained gelding dug in gamely and proved best through the finish under solid right handed pressure to win by a ¾ length.
Riding the Kimberly DePasquale-trained Dawns Fearless Son in the fifth race, Ramirez had a chance to upset the field. Dawns Fearless Son started in second to fall back to fifth at the quarter. The Florida-bred gelding advanced inside down the backstretch to gain along the rail in the far turn, abreast of the lead, and drove clear through the final furlong for Ramirez’s second win.
In the sixth race Ramirez was atop the Maryland-bred Cotton Brook Road. After patiently rating along the rail in fifth from the start, Cotton Brook Road waited briefly in the lane to forge through a rail opening near the furlong marker. The Kelly Lynn Deiter-trained gelding went clear leaving the eighth pole and held sway under a drive to the final win of Ramirez’s hat-trick by 1 ¼ lengths.
After coming away with a hat-trick, Ramirez rode again in the ninth race atop Jazzit, another gelding trained by Kimberly DePasquale. Jazzit was unhurried in the two path around the turn to angle out past the three-sixteenths pole to rally outside. After Jazzit placed second the winner Gracias Derenzo was disqualified for interference near the three-sixteenths pole and placed in third, moving Jazzit into first for Ramirez’s fourth win of the day.
Colonial Downs presents a ten-race card on Sunday, July 4th, with a special post time of 5:00 PM to celebrate Independence Day.
