Colonel Liam, who was set to vie for a third consecutive win in the Pegasus World Cup Turf Invitational next Saturday, has been retired after developing an ankle problem.

Trainer Todd Pletcher confirmed the news, which was reported earlier by Daily Racing Form. "The timing was such that now was the right time to retire him," he told DRF.

The 6-year-old son of Liam's Map has a career record of 12: 7-0-1 and earnings of $1,812,565.

Besides his two Pegasus Turf victories, Colonel Liam's other graded-stakes wins came in the 2021 Muniz Memorial Classic (G2) and Turf Classic (G1).

After selling for $50,000 as a yearling, he was bought by Lawana and Robert Law as a 2-year-old for $1.2 million.

He had three starts in 2022, following his Pegasus Turf win with a ninth-place finish in the Dubai Turf (G1) in March and then coming back in December to finish sixth in the Fort Lauderdale (G2).
