Colic complications claim Grade 1 winner Delta Prince

Grade 1 winner Delta Prince, an Adena Springs homebred, was euthanized at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital last Friday following complications associated with laminitis and renal failure subsequent to an incident of colic.

Set to join the Adena Springs Kentucky stallion roster for 2020, Delta Prince enjoyed a stellar racing career, earning $1,174,170 for Stronach Stables. Trained by Jimmy Jerkens, Delta Prince won this year’s Maker’s 46 Mile Stakes (G1) at Keeneland with a scintillating stretch rally and finished a game third in the Pegasus World Cup Turf Invitational Stakes (G1) at Gulfstream Park.

Among his highlights in 2018, Delta Prince captured the King Edward Stakes (G2) at Woodbine and finished a close second in the Fourstardave Handicap (G1) at Saratoga.

Impeccably bred, Delta Prince was a son of Street Cry out of the accomplished A.P. Indy mare Delta Princess, making him a half-brother to multiple Grade 1 winner and three-time Eclipse Award-winner Royal Delta.

“He was one of the last important sons of Street Cry,” said Donald Wells, farm director at Adena Springs Kentucky. “He will be sorely missed by not only everyone on our farm but the entire industry. He was a very tough and kind horse who fought every step of the way. I know he would have made a major impact at stud had he been given the opportunity.
