Co-owner contradicts trainer and says Didia is not retired

Contradicting an evening news release from Gulfstream Park, owner John Stewart of Resolute Racing went on social media Thursday night to say that Grade 1-winning turf mare Didia has not been retired to begin her breeding career.

“We have not retired Didia,” Stewart said in a 9:15 p.m. EST post on X. “Didia will not be competing in the Pegasus due to a procedure she had a couple of days ago. She is currently resting on our farm in Lexington.”

Stewart referred to the Jan. 25 running of the Grade 2, $500,000 Pegasus World Cup Filly & Mare Turf Invitational, which Didia won last year at Gulfstream Park.

Trainer Nacho Correas had said Thursday that the 6-year-old, Argentina-bred mare owned by Stewart in partnership with Merriebelle Stable would become a broodmare next year.

Stewart said not yet.

“She is an accomplished horse, and if she is retired, I assure you it will be announced right here first,” the X post said.

Stewart had tried for some time to buy into Didia. He finally succeeded shortly after Didia rallied for a neck victory in the 2024 Pegasus Filly & Mare Turf. It was her third graded-stakes win following 2023 victories in the Rodeo Drive (G2) and Modesty (G3).

Didia added her first Grade 1 score June 7 in the New York Stakes at Saratoga. Her most recent result was her third-place finish in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf on Nov. 2 at Del Mar, bringing her record to 20: 11-2-2 with $1,758,484 in purse earnings.
