Clubhouse Ride Wins Santa Anita Feature

Allowed to settle off of a
blistering early pace, Clubhouse Ride found a path through the lane and was up
to win Thursday’s $53,000 Hesperia Purse by a head under Aaron Gryder,
completing 6 ½ furlongs down Santa Anita’s hillside turf course in 1:11.53.
Truest Legend, with Tyler Baze up,
shot out of the outside post position eight and, with pressure from longshot
Streamside and Patrick Valenzuela, set rapid fractions of 20.50, 41.89 and
1:04.83. Truest Legend held to his lead tenaciously, relinquishing
command in the shadow of the wire.
“We got a solid pace up front,” said
Gryder. “Craig (Lewis, trainer) added blinkers today and he said he
worked great in them the other day. When we made the left-hand bend, he
was in my hands and I thought I had room inside Joe (Talamo, aboard Smokey
Lonesome) but he tightened it up on us.
“I had to wait and try to pick a
path and once I got him outside, he leveled really nice and made a heckuva
run.”
Clubhouse Ride, off at 6-1, paid
$15.40, $7.80 and $4.40.
Winless from nine starts this year,
the 4-year-old Candy Ride colt came off of a third-place finish down the hill
and at the same allowance condition on Sept. 30. Owned by Six-S Racing
Stable and Petralia, Clubhouse Ride, a winner at two of the $100,000 Barretts
Juvenile at Fairplex Park, ran his record to 21-3-3-8. With the winner’s
share of $31,800, he increased his bankroll to $393,260.
By any accounting, Truest Legend ran
a winning race and, absent the early pressure he got from Streamside, he could
well have stayed for the win under Baze. He finished a half-length in
front of Sweet Swap and Martin Garcia.
Truest Legend paid $12.80 and $8.20.
Sweet Swap, the 6-5 post time
favorite, never threatened, finishing third, 1 ½ lengths in front of Royal F
J. Sweet Swap paid $2.60 to show.
Santa Anita will offer an eight-race
card on Friday and there is a Pick Six carryover of $44,909. First post
time is 1 p.m.
