Clinch scenarios: 14 look like they are in Kentucky Derby 2026

Even though only five horses mathematically have clinched their places in Kentucky Derby 2026, history says connections for 14 should feel comfortable finding boots to make the walk from the backstretch gap to the Churchill Downs paddock May 2.

Emerging Market and Pavlovian assured themselves of invitations after they finished one-two in the Grade 2 Louisiana Derby on Saturday at Fair Grounds. Emerging Market earned his first 100 points. Pavlovian, already a winner in the Sunland Park Derby, added 50 to reach a total of 70. They passed the 60-point mathematical cutline, which has an asterisk.

Emerging Market prevails in Louisiana Derby.

Golden Tempo, who finished third at Fair Grounds, added 25 points and reached exactly 60. Because he has the lowest total of non-restricted stakes dollars among those horses who could finish with him in a multi-way tie, he would be on the bubble. That presumes all three international invitations are accepted. In practicality, Golden Tempo almost certainly has his place in the 20-horse field.

Fulleffort, who won the Jeff Ruby Steaks (G3) at Turfway Park, climbed to the top of the standings. His 110 points also include a second-place result over the same track last month in the John Battaglia Memorial.

Paladin, who won the Risen Star (G2), and Incredibolt, first in the Virginia Derby, already had 60 points each and are assured of clearing the earnings tiebreaker and getting into the $5 million classic.

Since the current qualifying system was started by Churchill Downs for the 2013 Derby, no fit horse reaching 46 points has been denied entry into the race. That means Chip Honcho, who finished fifth in the Louisiana Derby, also should be in with his total of 49 points.

At least two more bids will be sealed mathematically Saturday next week with the winners of the Florida Derby (G1) at Gulfstream Park and the Arkansas Derby (G1) at Oaklawn earning 100 points each. Second-place finishers, who will get 50 apiece, also should make it. The cutline may drop since 12 horses who already have earned points could add to their totals Saturday.

Next weekend also marks the end of the overseas trails to get to Kentucky. Hostilities permitting in Meydan, the UAE Derby (G2) is likely to qualify two horses for Churchill Downs. The Fukuryu Stakes early Saturday at Nakayama will complete the picture for the one entry reserved for a horse from Japan.

If any of the international berths is turned down, U.S. contenders would be eligible to fill the void.

3 from Fair Grounds go to Kentucky Oaks

Life of Joy, Bella Ballerina and Luv Your Neighbor added their names to the list of five fillies who have cleared the math hurdle and made it to the Kentucky Oaks (G1).

They finished in the Fair Grounds Oaks (G2) top three Saturday to join the Bob Baffert-trained pair Explora and Bottle of Rouge in the 14-horse starting gate on the night of May 1.

The cutline to run for the lilies remained 57 through the weekend. With fewer berths than there are for the Derby, the Oaks has a higher historic threshold. No filly with at least 51 points has been denied an invitation, but beneath Bottle of Rouge at 57 1/2, the next highest contenders in the standings have 50 each.

Lorelei Lee, who won her stakes debut Saturday in the Bourbonette Oaks at Turfway Park, moved to the threshold of getting into the $1.5 million Kentucky Oaks. Her connections, led by owner Harvey Diamond of Skychai Racing and trainer Mike Maker, said the $1,500 late nomination fee would be paid to make her eligible.

The Fantasy (G2) on Friday at Oaklawn and the Gulfstream Park Oaks (G2) on Saturday in Florida provide win-and-you’re-in tickets with one complication. The $1 million Fantasy drew only six entrants, including three from the barn of Mark Casse. If there are any scratches, the points would be reduced 25% or 50%. That already happened this winter with the Busher at Aqueduct and the Virginia Oaks at Colonial Downs, each of which had only five starters.
