Clement Looks Ahead to Whitney for Tonalist

Speaking from his shedrow Sunday morning, trainer Christophe Clement commented on the results of his Stars & Stripes Day contingent led by Tonalist's loss by a head in the Grade 2 Suburban and possible plans moving forward.

"Tonalist had to work very hard in that race," started Clement. "It was an unfortunate result at the wire to lose by a head, but we will regroup and move forward onto the [Grade 1] Whitney [August 8]. I don't think the fact he didn't have blinkers in the race was an issue. I don't use blinkers on him when he goes long on dirt. The way he ran yesterday shows he does not need blinkers."

Miss Chatelaine and Pine Needles, who both finished eighth and ninth-place respectively in the Grade 1 Belmont Oaks, would each most likely make a next start somewhere at Saratoga according to the trainer.

"The two fillies [Miss Chatelaine, Pine Needles] that got beat in the [Grade 1] Oaks, both came back okay," said Clement. "Pine Needles went out a big aggressive and she paid for it in the end, Miss Chatelaine went nine or ten wide at the quarter-pole and only got beat two or three lengths by the second horse [Itsonlyactingdad], but just basically it was Lady Eli, and then the rest of the field. One will move on to the Lake Placid [August 14 at Saratoga] and the other I will have to think more about but I'm not sure which one of the two yet."
