“City of Hope Mile” Set for Oct. 5

Next month, Santa Anita Park will run a Grade ll Stakes Race, the “City of Hope Mile,” in honor of the leading cancer research and treatment center. The first running of this annual autumn race will be Saturday, October 5, at Santa Anita Park.

“We are pleased to recognize the world-renowned City of Hope by naming a stakes race in their honor and thereby acknowledging the contribution they make to the lives of people everywhere,” said George Haines, Santa Anita Park President and General Manager.  “Running the City of Hope Mile will be just one small way to show our support for this amazing medical center and the incredible work they do.”

Now celebrating its centennial, City of Hope is recognized worldwide for its high-quality patient care and groundbreaking science. City of Hope’s mission is to quickly turn research ideas into better prevention strategies and cures.

“City of Hope is honored to be part of the races at Santa Anita Park,” said City of Hope Chief Philanthropy and External Relations Officer Kathleen Kane. “The support and awareness raised by the City of Hope Mile will directly benefit our mission of providing high-quality, compassionate care for cancer patients and their families. It also will, further our on-going goal of speeding scientific discoveries into treatments and cures.”

Formerly named the Arroyo Seco Mile, this year’s event  will mark the 28th running of the race; it was first run at Santa Anita in 1986. The race has a guaranteed purse of $150,000.

“This is one of our best races of the season and many horses from this race will compete in the prestigious Breeders’ Cup Mile, which runs four weeks later at Santa Anita Park,” said Tom Ludt, Sr. Vice President, Racing and Gaming.
