Churchill Downs has submitted its proposal to Gov. Andy Beshear to host the 2020 Kentucky Derby, according to track officials.

Darren Rogers, senior director of communications for Churchill Downs, confirmed the Derby operation plan has been delivered, but declined to provide further details. He said track officials continue to communicate with Beshear’s administration as Sept. 5, the date for the rescheduled Kentucky Derby, draws closer.

"We're continuing our conversation with the Governor's office about Derby Week," Rogers said in an email on Thursday. "We've submitted our plans and we expect some feedback in the coming days. We'll communicate details after approvals are granted and the specifics are realized."

The Derby was rescheduled from its traditional running on the first Saturday in May, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. While the state has slowly begun to reopen in recent weeks, questions remain whether fans will be allowed to attend the Derby and what social distancing protocols would be in place.
