The stallion War Front continued to light up the board at the Keeneland September Sale on Wednesday with China Horse Club and Maverick Racing buying Hip 509, a War Front yearling colt from the family of Rags to Riches, for $1.1 million.

Agent Mick Flanagan noted this colt would be owned in partnership with China Horse Club and WinStar Farm (Maverick), which campaigned Triple Crown winner Justify, himself a $500,000 Keeneland yearling.

“We’ve been thinking about the horse for the last couple of days,” Flanagan said of Wednesday's first million-dollar purchase. “He’s by War Front, who’s an exceptional stallion, out of a Street Cry mare and from a fabulous family.

“He looks more like a dirt horse than a turf horse so we’re not sure who will train him yet. He’ll go back to WinStar and we’ll have to run him on the dirt going forward.”

Flanagan secured the Lane’s End-consigned colt, who is out of Tiffany’s Honour, a half-sister to the female Belmont Stakes winner, Rags to Riches. The second dam, Better Than Honour, also produced multiple Grade 1-placed Jazil.

As for the price of the War Front colt, Flanagan said, “We were fairly high on him, and we didn’t want to get beat, so we were right up there.”

War Front sired the current sales topper, Hip 458, a $2.4 million colt purchased by Coolmoore and also from the Rags to Riches family. He went to the sales ring Tuesday.
