Cherokee Artist Denies Ribo Bobo in Mr. Prospector

David Jacobson’s Cherokee Artist wore down heavy favorite Ribo Bobo inside the final 1/16th of a mile to post a 3/4-length victory in the $75,000 Mr. Prospector Stakes at Monmouth Park on Sunday afternoon.

Trained by Jacobson, Cherokee Artist covered the six furlongs in 1:09 3/5 and returned $17.40, $4.40 and $3.20.  Ribo Bobo, sent off at 1-2, completed the $32.80 exacta and paid $2.20 and $2.10.  It was a head back to a hard-charging Candyman E, who paid $3.40 to show.

“I knew there was a lot of speed in the race so I just wanted to settle off the pace and gear up for one run,” said winning jockey Trevor McCarthy.  “We were able to save all the ground and he really took off in the stretch.  Ribo Bobo is a tough horse to run down, but we were able to do it today.”

A 9-year-old horse by Cherokee Run from the Mr. Prospector mare Race Artist, Cherokee Artist has won 13 of his 51 lifetime starts.

Live racing continues at Monmouth Park on Friday, July 4th for a holiday card featuring 11 races.  In addition, the racetrack will host it’s first-ever Heroes’ Backyard Picnic Celebration (on July 4 and 5) with free admission to members of the military, police officers, firefighters, and EMTs who are either in uniform or present identification.
