Chattel euthanized, jockey hurt in Kentucky Downs stakes
Both equine and human ambulances were on the track Saturday at Kentucky Downs after last out stakes winner Chattel broke down, unseating jockey Kendrick Carmouche, in the stretch of the $500,000 Kentucky Downs Juvenile Turf Sprint.
Chattel, a son of Giant Oak who last time out won Saratoga's Skidmore Stakes, was euthanized due to a fractured right shoulder. The colt, bred by the University of Kentucky, went off as a 5-2 second choice in the field of 10
Carmouche had the return mount on the Brandon McFarlane trainee. He was transported to TriStar Skyline Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn., hospital. Fellow jockey Joe Rocco told Kentucky Downs publicity that Carmouche told him "his leg was bothering him. He was conscious and we talked to him.”
Moonlight Romance, the race’s 8-5 favorite, went on to win, with Life Mission second. Stewards disqualified from third Sovereign Impact, who interfered with Chattel in the stretch of the 5 1/2-furlong race.
Replay shows Sovereign Impact, under jockey Adam Beschizza, moving off the rail. That forced Chattel out, where he appeared to clip heels with another horse.
Chattel was campaigned by David Baxter. Before the Skidmore, he broke his maiden July 13 at at Laurel Park and had well outrun both modest breeding and a $2,000 purchase price.
