Chasing 10,000 wins: Asmussen finishes Sunday still 1 shy

Steve Asmussen may be living proof that the last one is the hardest.

In his quest to become the first Thoroughbred trainer in North America to put together 10,000 wins, the Hall of Famer won twice early Saturday to get within one victory. But Asmussen’s next 30 starters could not get him past 9,999, so that was where he stood heading into Monday.

Asmussen went 0-for-8 from the eight races at Oaklawn and Sam Houston where he had starters Sunday.

One more triumph will put Asmussen into a club that has only one other member. World-record holder Juan Suárez Villarroel of Perú remains active with 10,336 training victories through Saturday, according to the website Página de Turf.

This list shows Asmussen’s results Sunday and his active entrants. Odds were from post time for completed races and morning lines for those yet to come. Favorites have asterisks.
