News that Jack Christopher’s connections are leaning toward the Breeders’ Cup Sprint for their multiple Grade 1-winning son of Munnings added a needed boost to the competitiveness of the race.
Yes, defending champion male sprinter Jackie’s Warrior is still very much the horse to beat, but the task to avenge his loss in last year’s Sprint and win another championship definitely gets tougher with the presence of the Woody Stephens (G1) and H. Allen Jerkens Memorial (G1) winner.
Looking at Jeff Bessa's Charting Horse Value for the Sprint, we see Jackie’s Warrior as the most likely winner as measured by both odds lines in the PFDS and Best odds columns, but both receive an A grade. From a wagering perspective, Jack Christopher could be the better play.
There is a scenario in which both Cody’s Wish and Gunite go to the Dirt Mile, and Kimari opts for the the Filly and Mare Sprint. That would create a huge drop-off between the top two contenders and the rest of the group. A single one way or the other, even if you opt for the shorter price on Jackie’s Warrior, could be a winning move, because you’re cutting the cost of your ticket in half vs. what many other horseplayers will do.
