Charles Town adds card to make up for last week's rainouts
Charles Town requested and received formal approval from the West Virginia Racing Commission to add next Wednesday to its live racing calendar. The move comes after the rain-shortened cards on Friday, April 11, and Saturday, April 12, and the 13 races that were lost as a result.
Entries for the special Wednesday card will be taken on Friday. Lost races will be continue to be brought back as extras on daily overnights.
Live racing resumes Thursday at the standard first-post time of 7 p.m. EDT.
After 4-year-old gelding Dicey Grey suffered what turned out to be a fatal injury racing in the homestretch during Saturday night’s opener on a sloppy, sealed track, Charles Town canceled the last seven races on the card when jockeys refused to keep riding.
“Riders decided in the interests of safety to not continue with the card,” track management said in a news release. Dicey Grey’s euthanization was confirmed by a track spokesperson Tuesday.
It was the second night in a row most of the card was wiped out by track conditions brought on by wet weather. The last six of nine races Friday also were canceled.
