Charities Accepting Memorial Donations for Jerkens

Charities in both Florida and New York are accepting donations in memory of late Hall of Fame trainer Allen Jerkens, who died March 18 at the age of 85.

A memorial celebration is being held for Jerkens on Tuesday, March 24 at 11 a.m. inside the Sport of Kings Theater on the second floor at Gulfstream Park.

 

Vaccarezza Hosting 2nd Annual PDJF Fundraiser March 23

Owner, trainer and restaurateur Carlo Vaccarezza will be hosting the 2nd annual Permanently Disabled Jockeys fundraiser at Frank & Dino’s in Deerfield Beach on Monday, March 23.

Reservations are required for the event, which starts at 6 p.m. and includes cocktails, dinner, entertainment and a silent auction. Tickets are $200 per person or $2,000 to sponsor a table of 10.

“It’s going to be a pretty good event,” Vaccarezza said. “We’re going to have a lot of good things there.”

Among the items up for auction are seasons to Ocala Stud stallions Adios Charlie, Overdriven and In Summation; memorabilia from 2006 Holy Bull, Florida Derby and Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro; a halter and shoes from multiple Grade 1 winner Little Mike; and a trip from Gulfstream Park to Saratoga from horse transporters Lorraine, Brooke-Ledge and Sallee.

The inaugural event last March was attended by nearly 150 people and raised $52,000 for the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund.

Frank & Dino’s (954-427-4909) Italian-American restaurant is located at 718 S. Federal Highway in Deerfield Beach.

Rainbow 6, Pick 5, Late Pick 4 Offering Guaranteed Pools Saturday

There will be a $100,000 guaranteed jackpot pool for the 20-cent Rainbow 6 on Saturday’s 12-race card.

The popular multi-race wager will span races 7-12 and includes the $200,000 Inside Information (G2) and the $200,000 Royal Delta (G2), both for older fillies and mares on the main track.

Saturday’s 50-cent Late Pick 4, covering races 9-12, will have a guaranteed pool of $100,000, while the 50-cent Pick 5 (races 8-12) will offer a guaranteed pool of $50,000.

First race post time is 1 p.m.

Who’s Hot: Jockey Javier Castellano added to his Championship Meet-leading totals with three winners: Scorpion Aly ($5.20) in the fourth race, Charming Delilah ($6.60) in the fifth and Fastidia’s Sun ($4.80) in the eighth. Apprentice Tyler Gaffalione had a riding double aboard Spot a Kiss ($18.80) in the first and Bullheaded Lady ($8) in the sixth, and Edgard Zayas visited the winner’s circle twice with General Ann ($6.20) in the second and The Battle Is On ($14.60) in the ninth.
