Champion Sistercharlie to face seven rivals in Beverly D.
Trainer Chad
Brown returns to Arlington International Racecourse in full force as
he brings defending champion Sistercharlie, the always consistent
Competitionofideas,
and
last year’s third-place finisher Thais
for
the Grade 1 Beverly D., which will be run at 1 3/16-miles for fillies
and mares over the Arlington turf course.
The winner of the
Beverly D will receive an automatic berth into the starting gate of
the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf at Santa
Anita.
Peter Brant’s Sistercharlie
comes
in having won five of her last six races, five of which have come in
Grade 1's including last year’s Beverly D. which catapulted her to
a neck victory in last year’s Breeders Cup Filly & Mare
Turf.
In her most recent start, Sistercharlie
picked
up where she left off as she powered home for a 1 3/4-length victory
in the Diana (G1) at Saratoga going 1 1/8-miles on the Saratoga turf
course in July. The Diana was her fourth straight victory and only
start thus far in 2019.
Sistercharlie
will
look to make history on Saturday, as she attempts to become the first
to win consecutive runnings of the Beverly D. Regular rider John
Velazquez will be aboard. The pair will break from post 7, and she is
listed as the 8-5 morning line favorite.
Klaravich Stables
Competitionofideas
is
in search of her first trip to the winner's circle in 2019 after
having three consecutive second-place finishes all by less than one
length. Chad Brown brings her in off of a head-bobbing neck defeat
last out in the Matchmaker (G3) at Monmouth, which was run at 1
1/8-miles over the turf in July. The daughter of Speighstown does own
one career Grade 1 victory in her ten race career, winning the
American Oaks at Santa Anita where she overwhelmed a field of seven
others for a 2 3/4-length victory. Her career record stands at 10:
3-4-2 with more than $500,000 in career earnings.
She will
break from post 3 Saturday, will be ridden by Javier Castellano, and
is listed at 6-1 on the morning line.
Aidan O’Brien will send Fleeting to post as the 5-2 morning line second choice. Owned by Mrs.John Magnier and Michael B Tabor, Fleeting exits the Group 1 Irish Oaks at Curragh, which was run at 1 1/2-miles on July 20, where she finished second beaten a half-length. She has yet to find the winner's circle in 2019, but the daughter Zoffany has put in three consecutive solid efforts. The Beverly D. will be her first U.S. appearance. The Aiden O’Brien 3-year-old filly will be guided by Ryan Moore, and will break from post 1.
O’Brien also
enters Magic
Wand,
who is cross entered in the Arlington Million (G1) and is still
undecided.
Magic
Wand began
her 2019 campaign with a solid second place effort behind Bricks and
Mortar, who will be the heavy favorite in the Arlington Million, in
the Grade I Pegasus World Cup Turf Invitational. After a third place
finish in the Grade I Man’O War at Belmont Park, the daughter of
Galileo(IRE) put in two consecutive second place finishes in June
when she was runner up in both the Wolferton Stakes, and the Grade I
Juddmonte Pretty Polly at Curragh(IRE).
Magic
Wand, who has banked $1.7 million in earnings, will
be looking for her first win of 2019. She will be ridden by Wayne
Lordan, break from post 6, and is 3-1 on the morning line.
Trainer
William J. Haggas brings Awesometank
for
her first North American. Owned by Lee Yuk Lun, Awesometank
started
her 2019 campaign with a win in the Conqueror Stakes at Goodwood in
May. She followed up with a second-place finish in the Group 3
Investec Princess Elizabeth Stakes at Epsom. After an
uncharacteristic seventh place finish last out, the daughter of
Intense Focus will look to get back on track and secure her first
Grade 1 victory.
Awesometank will be ridden by Florent Geroux,
will break from post 2, and is listed at 8-1 on the morning
line.
Carol Hammersmith’s Oh
So Terrible will
look to take the step forward as she returns off a disappointing
effort last out in the Modesty Handicap (G3). Trained by local
trainer Bradley Ross, she will be ridden by Jose Valdivia Jr. and
will break from post 4.
Remember
Daisy
will
look to give jockey Mitchell Murill his first career Grade 1 victory.
Owned by Al and Bill Ulwelling, and trained by Gary Scherer, Remember
Daisy
exits
a formidable fourth-place finish in the Modesty Handicap (G3). She
will break from post 5 on.
Rounding out the Beverly D. field
will be Thais.
The daughter of Rio De La Piata ran third in this race last year
behind and will look to improve upon her recent sixth-place finish in
the Diana. She will be ridden by Irad Ortiz Jr. and break from post
8.
The $600,000 Beverly D. is carded as the ninth race with an
expected post time of 4:53 PM CDT.
