Grade 2 winner Central Banker will enter stud next year in New York at McMahon of Saratoga Thoroughbreds, which purchased the 4-year-old son of Speightstown for $400,000 during Monday’s seventh session of Keeneland’s November Breeding Stock Sale. The amount was the highest price paid during the session, which generated another set of strong results.
Gross sales to date are $189,374,000 for 1,597 horses, marking a 5.55 percent increase from the $179,416,800 paid for 1,643 horses last year. The average of $118,581 is 8.6 percent above last year’s average of $109,201, while the median of $60,000 jumped 15 percent from $52,000 in 2013.
On Monday, Keeneland sold 276 horses for $8,944,500, nearly equal to the $8,960,100 spent on 304 horses at the corresponding session in 2013. The average of $32,408 increased 10 percent from last year’s average of $29,474, and the median of $25,000 was two percent above the $24,500 in 2013.
Claiborne Farm, agent, consigned Central Banker, the third-to-last horse offered Monday. He is out of the stakes-winning Go for Gin mare Rhum and is a half-brother to Grade 2 winner Gantry and stakes-placed Song of Pirates.
Mike Mahon said the purchase price “was a little higher” than initially planned, “but it’s competitive to buy stallions. He’s a very nice Speightstown, just a beautifully balanced horse.”
Among Central Banker’s four wins in 13 starts was this year’s Churchill Downs Stakes (G2). In 2013, he was second in the Malibu (G1) and third in the Foxwoods King’s Bishop (G1). Central Banker earned $598,786.
With the purchase of Central Banker, McMahon of Saratoga Thoroughbreds was the session’s leading buyer.
The second-highest price on Monday was the $190,000 that SF Bloodstock spent on the broodmare Summer Star, a stakes-winning daughter of Siberian Summer carrying a full sibling to Grade 3 winner and Grade 1-placed My Happy Face.
Vinery Sales, agent for Spendthrift Farm LLC, consigned Summer Star, a 14-year-old daughter of the Candi’s Gold mare Candi’s Star. She is a full sister to stakes winner Summer Sensation and from the family of Grade 1 winner Forest Danger.
The session’s top-priced weanling was the colt by Haynesfield sold to Unicorn Racing for $130,000. The colt, consigned by Winter Quarter Farm, agent, is out of the Capote mare Cape North, a daughter of champion North Sider. He is a half-brother to stakes winners Fufty Too and Spirited Away, dam of Grade 3 winner Prospective.
Taylor Made Sales Agency led all consignors by selling 30 horses for $1,129,000.
The 11-day November Sale continues through Friday. Sessions begin at 10 a.m. The entire sale is streamed live at Keeneland.com.
