Hidden Brook Farm's Catch My Drift captured her first victory of 2015 winning the $100,000 Summer Colony on Monday at Saratoga Race Course.
Catch My Drift, a 4-year-old daughter of Pioneerof the Nile, sat back in third for the majority of the race as favored Tiz So Sweet set fractions of 23.69 seconds, 46.98 and 1:11.15, closely followed by Holiday's Jewel in second. On the turn, Catch My Drift made a sweeping move, passing both horses with ease and finishing the race in front by 6 ¼ lengths. Her final time for the 1 1/8 miles was 1:48.72.
"It went the way we hoped," said winning trainer Chad Brown. "We figured that the favorite in the race [Tiz So Sweet] was the controlling speed and a real quality horse. We were coming off a little bit of a layoff as well, so I told [jockey] Irad [Ortiz Jr.] that if we can execute it, just get right behind that horse early and hope somebody goes with her and softens her up. I think we had her fit enough if we just got a little help up front, and fortunately we did.
"It was pretty impressive," Brown added. "This filly has been a nice filly all the way along in the barn. She had a few little issues and got her year started late, but now I think we finally have her back on track and hopefully we can build off this race."
Winning jockey Irad Ortiz, Jr. was equally happy with the outcome of the race saying "It was a great race. She was ready today."
Tiz So Sweet finished second followed by Imposing Grace in third. Samantha Nicole, Montana Native and Holiday's Jewel completed the order of finish.
Catch My Drift has now won four races from eight starts and has two seconds. She was bred in Kentucky by Fred W. Hertrich III and John D. Fielding. She returned $7.20 for a $2 win bet.
