Benefitting from a pace that more closely resembled that of a sprint, Cary Street rallied from far back to win Friday’s Grade II, $200,000 Las Vegas Marathon by eight lengths, as he covered 1 ¾ miles in 2:58.29 under Miguel Mena.
With eight 3-year-olds and up engaged, Big Cazanova, with Corey Nakatani, and Big Kick, with Tyler Baze up, sprinted for the first turn, leading to fractions of 23.41, 46.51, 1:10.20, 1:35.88, 2:02.76 and 2:30.51.
Hammered down from his morning line of 10-1, Cary Street, who is trained and owned in-part by Brendan Walsh, paid $7.80, $3.80 and $3.20.
Owned in partnership with Mark Detampel, Cary Street, a 5-year-old Kentucky-bred gelding by Smarty Jones, got his sixth win from 19 career starts. With the winner’s share of $120,000, he increased his earnings to $370,275.
“I didn’t really want to be that far back early on, but they were rockin’ and rollin’ the first part of the race,” said Mena. “This horse runs all day, so I wasn’t worried about it when they went out there so quick…I started looking for the leader at the five-eighths pole and he started to kick on for me. He finished great, he was rolling…It’s a great feeling to be here on Breeders’ Cup (Friday). It feels awesome.”
Ridden by Elvis Trujillo, Irish Surf hugged the rail throughout and was in fifth position as the field went under the wire the first time. The favorite at 2-1, he paid $3.60 and $2.80.
Next to last early, Patrioticandproud was on the move into the final turn but couldn’t match strides with the winner and finished third, a half length behind runner-up Irish Surf. Ridden by Martin Pedroza, he was off at 23-1 and paid $8.40 to show.
