Caribou Club rolls home in Del Mar's Seabiscuit Handicap
Caribou Club saved all the ground and
rushed to victory in Saturday’s Grade 2, $200,000 Seabiscuit Handicap over Del Mar's turf. The Glen Hill Farm homebred rebounded
from a close third-place finish in the Eddie D Stakes (G3) to capture his
second graded stakes score this season.
By City Zip and out of Broken Dreams, by Broken Vow, Caribou Club hails from the Glen Hill family, which trainer Tom Proctor is familiar with.
"I hot-walked this horse’s seventh dam for my dad and trained from about the fifth dam on," Proctor said. "It’s nice to win one. This is a good horse, I think he’ll run well down the hill (at Santa Anita)."
Kenjisstorm took command over Secretary At War and set opening fractions of
23.75, 47.81 and 1:12.37. Jockey Joe Talamo initially dropped Caribou Club back and gained
ground on the leaders in the second turn. He guided his mount off the rail at
the top of the lane and made a bid three-wide in the homestretch.
Kenjisstorm faded but Secretary At War still had fight left. The effort was not
enough to keep Caribou Club from rolling home, though. The Tom Proctor trainee
completed the 1 1/16 miles on turf in 1:41.38.
"Good trip all the way," Talamo said. "He was a lot closer up this time; they weren’t running any :42 and 3 like last time (down the hill at Santa Anita). When I asked him, he had a great turn of foot.
"I used a saddle Gary Stevens gave me today. When he retired, he gave me one of his saddles, and one to Mike Smith and one to Drayden Van Dyke. Now I know why he won all those stakes races."
Secretary At War held for second over Synchrony and Big Score.
